The overwater-villa resorts get all the attention, but local-island guesthouses on islands like Maafushi or Thoddoo cost a fraction of the price and still put you steps from the same turquoise water. You'll trade a private pool for a public "bikini beach," but you'll also find better local food and a more authentic slice of Maldivian life. Ferries between islands are cheap; speedboat transfers from the airport are the one expense worth budgeting for.
